Steel structures are widely used in the construction industry due to their high strength and toughness, which are inseparable from the excellent functional properties of the processing materials. These properties not only determine the load-bearing capacity of steel structures but also influence their processing difficulty and service life.
High strength is the core property of steel structural materials. Steel must possess high yield strength and tensile strength to withstand external forces such as the building’s own weight, wind loads, and seismic actions. For instance, high-rise buildings and long-span bridges require high-strength steels like Q355 or Q460 to ensure the structure remains free from deformation or failure under complex loads.

Excellent plasticity and toughness are indispensable. Plasticity allows steel to undergo significant deformation under stress without immediate fracture, enabling the structure to absorb energy and redistribute stress. Toughness prevents brittle failure under dynamic or impact loads and in low-temperature environments, reducing the risk of sudden structural failure.
Superior weldability is critical for steel fabrication. During welding, steel must bond well with weld metal and the heat-affected zone without defects like cracks or porosity, ensuring joint strength and stability. Common steels like Q235B and Q345B exhibit good weldability, facilitating component connections through welding processes.
Corrosion resistance determines the service life of steel structures. In humid, acidic, or alkaline environments, steel must possess adequate rust resistance to minimize maintenance costs. Some projects utilize weathering steel, whose surface forms a dense oxide film that effectively blocks further corrosion. Alternatively, surface anti-corrosion treatments can enhance the corrosion resistance of ordinary steel.
Additionally, steel must possess good cold bending properties to meet cold forming requirements and exhibit stable chemical properties to ensure uniform material composition and consistent performance. These combined performance characteristics collectively guarantee the safety, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of steel structures.
